Creative and practical arts (CAPA) (K-6)

At our school, we believe the Creative and Practical Arts (CAPA) are essential to every child’s development, providing opportunities for self-expression, imagination, and creativity. Through the four art forms — Visual Arts, Music, Drama, and Dance — students explore and express their ideas, develop practical skills, and engage with a variety of cultural and artistic traditions.

We are implementing the new NSW K–6 Creative Arts syllabuses, which bring fresh, contemporary approaches to arts education while ensuring strong foundations in artistic knowledge, understanding, and practice. These new syllabuses place an emphasis on creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking, ensuring students are well-equipped for both personal and academic success.

In Visual Arts, students learn to:

  • Make and respond to a variety of artworks using different materials and techniques
  • Explore the work of artists from diverse times and cultures
  • Develop skills in drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, and digital media

In Music, students:

  • Engage in performing, composing, and listening activities
  • Develop musical concepts such as rhythm, pitch, dynamics, and structure
  • Explore music from different genres, cultures, and traditions

In Drama, students:

  • Explore character, movement, voice, and space
  • Participate in improvisation, role-play, and performance
  • Respond to drama works and reflect on their own dramatic experiences

In Dance, students:

  • Explore movement and choreographic techniques
  • Express ideas through body movement and spatial awareness
  • Respond to and appreciate different styles and traditions of dance

Our CAPA programs are inclusive, inspiring, and designed to build confidence and joy in learning. They provide every child with the chance to discover their creative potential and to participate in a vibrant school culture that celebrates the arts.
