Band

Beauty Point Public School is a small school with a big musical heart! Many children (the majority of Years 3-6) are involved in our band program, which offers three school bands to suit differing abilities:

  • Junior Band for complete beginners;
  • Senior Band for those with some musical experience;

Each band meets for a weekly rehearsal with our band director Mr. Ray Hampton. Junior band meets in the afternoon and the Senior ban in the morning.

Our bands perform at events such as Grandparents' Day, Education Open Day, Tim Tam Night and Mosman Festival, Sydney Eisteddfod and NSW school's festival.

We also look for different performance opportunities for our school bands including Christmas concerts in the playground and last year they performed at an event at Balmoral Rotunda.  For the last few years our band children have also been given the opportunity to record their music at Trackdown Recording Studios at Moore Park.

The band children learn quickly, especially through intensive experiences like Band Workshop, and the highlight of the year for many is the weekend Band Camp in May each year at the Academy of Sport in Narrabeen.

More experienced band members are given responsibility as Band Captains or Band Mentors, and get involved in compering our concerts or mentoring our younger band members.

Joining Band

A new training band is formed from beginner musicians at the end of each year during Term 4. No musical experience is required – just enthusiasm!

In November each year, interested children from Years 2-5 are invited to an Instrument Tryout session where they can try out three different instruments and our expert tutors can advise on which instrument may suit them best. This can depend on lip shape, hand size and physical strength to hold and carry the instrument.

Instruments offered at Beauty Point currently include flute, oboe, clarinet, bass clarinet, alto and tenor saxophone, trumpet, French horn, trombone, baritone, euphonium, keyboard and percussion/ drums.

Our aim is to offer a place in band to every child interested. Once a child is matched to an instrument, their parents then organize individual weekly lessons for their child with an instrument tutor. Instrument lessons are offered at school between 3:15pm and 6:45pm by experienced tutors in woodwind (flute, clarinet and oboe), saxophone, trumpet, lower brass (trombone, French horn and baritone/ euphonium) and percussion.

New band members can either buy their own instrument or hire an instrument through the band program. Our instrument hire scheme offers an affordable way to get started. We hire instruments out for an annual fee each year which covers both the hire and the annual servicing of the instrument. At the end of the hire period, you can choose to purchase your instrument.

You will be amazed how much the children can learn to play in a short time!

Why enroll your child in band?

Experts agree that learning music has many benefits for your child;

  • It will boost their brain power – Music stimulates the parts of the brain that are related to reading, math and emotional development
  • It will improve their memory – participation in music at an early age can stimulate different patterns of brain development
  • It helps them socially – being part of a band can help children learn to be part of a team and appreciate rewards that come part of working together and the development of leadership skills and discipline
  • It's a confidence builder
  • Its constant learning
  • It fosters creativity

Welcoming new students

We welcome new students to Beauty Point Public School who wish to get involved in our band program.

If you already play an instrument, then our conductor will listen to you play and assess which band will be right for you.

As a community school our band is run entirely by parent volunteers so we always welcome parents to get involved with their child's band over the year in whatever way they can.

If you are interested in joining band or starting to learn to play a musical instrument, then you can email the Band Manager, managerBPPSband@gmail.com for more information or call 0404 244 510.
